UDD CHALI MEIN MANCHALI....

I dedicate this post to all women out there, who are strong, fearless, resilient, independent, loyal, lovable and REAL!!

(Our dear friend Veena Nayak is missing here, as she was away vacationing)

Isn't "FACEBOOK" a word we all love to hate ??
For many it's so passé, a waste of time, intrusion of one's privacy etc, etc. But honestly, for me it has worked wonders in a creative way and without qualms I admit that I love it and cannot live without it.
As cliched as it may sound, I have mainly used FB as a platform to positively inspire others and get inspired in return. Apart from reconnecting with old friends and family, I have also stumbled upon a few like minded people whose friendship has been creatively inspiring and enriching. One such virtual encounter was with Ms.Yuti Shah, the artist/creator/owner of "UDD" ( meaning fly- denoting freedom in Hindi), a happy Indian clothing brand that I absolutely love.
The vibrant hued cotton and silk sarees with hand drawn Madhubani motifs and a unique mix of prints simply took my breath away. I hadn't seen anything like this before, so distinctive in it's style and feel. It's a brand that believes in spreading happiness everyday through it's designs, inspired by Indian folk art and colors. I am a sucker for anything and everything that is traditionally Indian, with a modern twist to it. To me UDD represents the same and may be the reason why I believe in this brand and am writing this post today.

Fashion is my forte and sarees are my passion. My extreme love for this 6 yard fabric is a known thing amongst  friends and family. And when I love something so strongly, I make it a point to share it with my good friends and get them all excited about it. So when I discovered UDD, I had to tell my friends and it took us no time to order our first UDDs. With such beautiful Indian fabrics in hand, a fun photo-shoot for Sage & Slingback was an obvious thing to do. My friends were super excited about the photo shoot and were game for it.  A "style meet" was organized and we decided to parade the streets of Michigan Avenue in our beautiful UDD sarees, bindis and flowers. We wanted to show the world the ease, comfort and  rawness of a bold colorful cotton saree amidst the sky scrapers and the crowded streets of our city. So here it is people, a day in our lives..... flying high in UDD!

I wanted a candid, not so perfect, careless yet comfortable feel to the pictures. So "be yourself" and "don't pose" were the only 2 instructions that I gave my friends. Our starting point was the Art Museum and as we walked on Michigan Ave, Reema, our talented young shutterbug started taking pictures, mostly without our knowledge. Onlookers admired our outfits and compliments started pouring in as we walked along.

We wandered around the Magnificent Mile  in our sarees without feeling awkward or embarrassed, spreading the essence of UDD - HAPPY,FREE & REAL!!

We wanted to capture the essence of the city, the people and the hustle-bustle.
It's also one of the reasons why we avoided shooting at the usual touristy spots like the BEAN, BUCKINGHAM FOUNTAIN or the NAVY PIER. With compliments pouring in at every step, we sure did feel like the "brand ambassadors" of our country, proudly promoting our National Costume.

"A christian is not to become a Hindu or a Bhuddist, nor a Hindu or a Bhuddist to become a Christian. But each must assimilate the spirit of others and yet preserve his individuality and grow according to his own law of growth."

This was an excerpt from Swami Vivekanandas concluding address from the world parliament of religions held in Chicago on Sept 27th, 1893....How profound!!

Spreading our colorful wings and imbibing the best of both worlds, we, the team "Sage&Slingback" were soaring high in our spirits and Indianness!!

We laughed and talked as we walked along the streets - briefly stopping at the bridge, the Wrigley building and the soda place Ghirardelli's. People on the streets took our pictures and admired us in our sarees. One even wished us an enjoyable stay here in Chicago, mistaking us for tourists from India.

  1. Hey Jay, most beautiful. Loved the post, the beautiful ladies, and the colourful saris. The first thing that came to my mind was the song from Paa - Udi Udi main Udi, itefaaq se. And that would make a perfect title for this post.
    "UDI UDI MAIN UDI"
(BTW, are you allowed only one comment?!)
Keep up the good work :)

    1. "But each must assimilate the spirit of others and yet preserve his individuality and grow according to his own law of growth." I think this is a vivacious presentation of Swami V's line. This is U(DD)topia. Stunning presence of Shakti in the ladies above, moving through the multitude of the cosmopolitan Chi town yet stunningly conspicuous in vibrant smiles and colors of UDD!

    9. Yes, I am addicted! To say otherwise would be self deception. It has been a fun 2 weeks of colors and churning creative juices. But more importantly this blog brings to life a deep philosophy. There is talk of the material and the spiritual. The definition of style and wise words of a Swami. UDD too is material and spiritual - as in the fabric and divine art imprinted on it - like the body and the soul. So to the ladies who created this blog and UDD, a soulful THANK YOU for artfully painting the duality of life, the soul and the saree and ultimately giving us all a chance to enjoy something real!!

    Dear Jayashree,

I love what you've done with the article and pictures! An absolute delight to watch :-) Very reflective of the brand you are promoting that I SOOOOO love!!! You ladies look like you've had way too much fun and thanks for sharing a bit of your city with us.

    Unmistakably Indian,
    Digitally fresh,
Divinity through art. Set yourself free with UDD!

I know it's a little long for a title but then again, it's really hard to write about the magic of all of that 6 yards in a coupla words :-)

  14. "Rainbow hues"..a walk to remember!!

  15. OK, this post really took my breath away. Love love it. Not at all a fashion expert and cannot differentiate stilettos from sandals, but I recognize beauty when I see it and most of all love the "real" women in the pics. Can so identify with them.

My suggestion for a title: "Six yards and Sepia"...the limitless beauty of the saree starkly juxtaposed with images of modern Chicago!

That second to last pic with the horse drawn carriage is fabulous. Liked S&S and Udd on FB :-)

  16. Loved the post Jayashree. I have seen the corners of your home on IK, your pics on the MORA page and read a couple of your old posts here too. Love the way you play with colours and share my love for things Indian and traditional :) Kudos on this entire post.

  48. Nice!

And here are a few suggestions for a title.

Considering that you are pretty comfortable in fashionable UDD clothing, I would say,
"Fashionably Comfortable In Our Second Skins" or "Fashionably Comfortable In Our Second Skins - in a stylish UDD way"

Or how about - "U Did it Dears" - As Yuti Shah would probably say

"City of pretty shoulders" - tongue in cheek (Chicago is a city of big shoulders)

Actually, you already have a title in your blog - "Flying high in UDD!"

    Arun M

    ReplyDelete
  49. "Of COLOR and SEPIA" - I find this title apt as with those lovely prints and brights of UDD, everything surrounding feels colorless...well suggested by your photographs!

I think of few other names too:
    "UDD chali - Chicago"
    "Joy of the free spirit"
    "Rangeeli Ho"
    "Rang Birangi"
"Manchala Panchi" - mixing their 2 collections

I hope you now understand how desperate I am for that lovely dupatta ;)Hope I wins!!!

  50. Hello Jayshree,

Lovely post and beautiful pictures. Since I was here I went through some of your archive posts. Very heartwarming the one just prior to this. I particularly love your attention to detail in most of the others.

As for a title, looking thro' the pictures I felt like you girls were singing this Frank Sinatra to the others

"Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away
If you can use some exotic booze
There's a bar in far Bombay
Come on and fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away..."

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euci0_BBmNE

So my title recommendation would be 'Come fly with me, let's fly, let's fly away...'

    Best,

  51. I love the UDD Stuff. I aspire to have all of them ...thats only if I could afford it all ;)
Saw your designs, and read through some of your thoughts.
All I could get through it is that your focus area is Woman and so you designing stuff only for them and not men.!
Secondly, You want all your"UDD wearers to be independent and free.
With this in mind , I could think of this title for your blogs:
    "Mein UDD ke chali"
Though a simple statement, I feel it has the flavour of three ingredients ' Desi', 'Freedom', and 'Feminism'

Absolutely fantastic - the concept, the setting, the final product. It was a morning treat to read your article. Great job with the pictures, Reema. "I am She...." - it means a variety of things, for boldness has a range of voices. Some are bright and loud and some are firm and quiet. To me, this post was fearless and daring and yet had the glory and beauty, that we women own. To me, this post was asking "What is your best bold?"

Hmmmm..seeing the reaction that people gave after watching the "Sages in the City" (wink!), I believe the most apt title for this post would be:

    "UDD UDD ke na dekh...!!"

Loved the strategy chosen to create awareness of UDD and the Indian art to the whole world!

I'm sure you all had a proud moment while walking on those streets!

I think that the title which best suits this post is

Acquainting UDDness of India to the outside.

  106. One more name for your blogs that I can think of is "TITLI"(butterfly).
It catches the most attention and that is something you admire the most when you see it.
No two butterflies are like, Therein lies its uniqueness.
It can turn out to be a good metaphor to showcase your design style that is colourful and exclusive!!

  107. Here I step in to suggest some title for your blogsite. .... (in the last few hours )...
To start with, My fiancee is a great fan of your designs. So I thought I could gift her the dupatta...if I get...;)
I feel that People till now have suggested names considering your designs, your style or may be having prefix or suffix UDD"!
But I differ in this case. You want a name for your blogsite.. some kinda space where you want.. or make others feel the FREEDOM..
Its the SPACE or the Blogsite that you want to create....which reflects the motto that you want to put across....!!
So the name could be " Khula Asmann"!!
Indeed plenty of space to UDD!!
